WinterWonderGrass is not a standard music festival. The series brings bluegrass and roots music to two very different outdoor settings: the snow-covered slopes of Steamboat Springs and the beach, desert and mountains of Baja California Sur.
Music sits at the heart of both gatherings, with established and rising bluegrass and roots artists appearing across the programme. The Steamboat festival has four stages, including three inside large heated tents, while BajaWonderGrass is a smaller, family-friendly gathering beside the Sea of Cortez.
At Steamboat, festivalgoers can move between live sets, food trucks, a coffee bar and a heated kids’ zone. Three-day passes also include drink tastings from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM each day, with beer, wine, spirits, and non-alcoholic options available. Age restrictions apply to alcoholic drinks.
BajaWonderGrass has a different feel. Music takes place at La Tuna Beach Bar, where the beach, desert and sea replace Colorado’s snowy mountain setting. Food and drinks are sold by La Tuna restaurant and festival vendors, with visitors advised to bring Mexican pesos or a credit card.
Care for the surrounding environment remains part of both events. At Steamboat, WinterWonderGrass works with Minimal Impact and asks guests to reuse their festival cups, bring refillable items, sort waste and travel by bus, on foot or through car sharing. Steamboat Springs also operates a free public bus service.
BajaWonderGrass supports the Azul Cerralvo Foundation and plans daily beach cleanups with No Más Basura. Parking at the beach is very limited, so guests are asked to use the festival shuttle, walk or share a vehicle.
The Steamboat weekend also begins with a free welcome show at the base of the gondola on Thursday, March 4. Free on-mountain shows are planned for Saturday and Sunday, though a valid lift ticket, sightseeing ticket, or season pass is required to access them.
Each setting gives the music a different backdrop. Steamboat combines live roots music with a Colorado ski-town weekend, while BajaWonderGrass swaps the snow for Sea of Cortez sunsets and a small beachside crowd.
Mark your calendar for March 5–7, 2027, in Steamboat Springs, or April 22–24, 2027, in Baja California Sur. Pack for snow and cold weather in Colorado or warm coastal conditions in Mexico, and check the official event pages for ticket and travel information before booking.
